How to tell if a DJ is just a “song player” or truly knows how to run a wedding

Choosing a DJ isn’t about playlists—it’s about judgement: someone who drives the day’s rhythm, coordinates with the team and makes live decisions. Here are clear signs to tell apart a DJ who only plays tracks from one who runs a wedding from start to finish.

Clear signs of real experience

  • Pre‑event script. They request a clear cue sheet (who gives each signal, how and when). Without it, micro‑chaos appears.
  • Zoned sound plan. Several moderate points aimed at the floor, with clear speech for ceremony/toasts. “One loud speaker” isn’t a plan.
  • Reading the room. Intentional mixing, hybrid blocks, smooth lifts/dips. The floor isn’t forced with volume.
  • True coordination. They meet WP/head waiter/photo/video, agree on cues and respect service timings.
  • Written Plan B. Rain, limiter, delays, power cut—what they’ll do, who signals, how long it takes.
  • Testing & timing. Early arrival, mic/levels/light checks, adapted to the space.

Questions that reveal a DJ without chops (plain language)

  • “Will one powerful speaker cover the whole garden?” → Red flag. Missing zoned coverage.
  • “If it’s windy… we’ll just turn it up.” → Ignores how sound disperses.
  • “Speeches? People can just speak louder.” → No mic plan or warm lighting.
  • “If the plan changes, we’ll wing it.” → No transition strategy or Plan B.
  • “I’ll play whatever you send.” → No talk of order, energy or reading people.

What you want to hear: “I’ll prepare a cue sheet, test mics and lights, work with the planner/head waiter, set sound points by headcount and have a Plan B.”

What “running” a wedding means (not just playing it)

  • Human pacing. Alternating focus and rest: music to activate or soften at the right time.
  • Clean transitions. Space changes with music and short lines—nothing drops into silence.
  • Entrances & moments. Clear cues for cake, bouquet, videos, toasts—short and crisp.
  • Atmosphere & energy. Supportive light (warm at tables, focus on floor), bar nearby and visible chill area.
  • Live decisions. If timing slips, they reorder calmly. The couple barely notices.

If you want a DJ who truly runs your wedding with judgement and smooth rhythm (not just “plays music”), message me. We’ll design cues, energy and transitions so everything flows. 🎧
